How to Calculate ROI on Manufacturing Equipment
A useful ROI model needs to capture more than purchase price. The real case is built from throughput, labor, uptime, maintenance, consumables and the value of capacity.
Start with the basic ROI equation
A straightforward annual ROI calculation compares the annual financial benefit created by the equipment against the total investment required to put it into productive service.
ROI = (Annual Benefit − Annual Incremental Cost) ÷ Total Investment × 100
Model the benefits that actually move the economics
- Direct labor reduction or labor redeployment.
- Higher parts-per-hour or higher usable capacity.
- Lower scrap and rework.
- Reduced consumable cost per part.
- Reduced unplanned downtime.
- Lower outsourced-processing expense.
- Additional contribution margin from capacity that can actually be sold.
Do not ignore implementation and ownership cost
Freight, installation, training, tooling, software, facilities work, preventive maintenance and financing can materially change the payback period. A comparison that excludes them can make a weaker investment look artificially attractive.
Payback period matters too
ROI describes the return relative to invested capital. Payback period answers a different question: how long does it take for cumulative benefits to recover the initial investment? Decision-makers often need both.
